The Return. Belle façon d'ouvrir son nouveau disque pour celui qui a été si occupé ces six dernières années. Son temps partagé entre Le Villejuif Underground et CIA Débutante, il est vrai que Nathan Roche n'avait cependant pas sorti d'album en son nom depuis 2015 !
« Drink Up, Rainforest Sinatra » donc, soit douze morceaux faisant tant la chronique de sa nouvelle vie à Paris (Brocante à Belleville) que témoignant de son adaptation récente au climat plus clément des Bouches du Rhone (La Ciotat). Car c'est entre Marseille et Aubagne que ce disque à été enregistré à l'été 2020, Nathan mobilisant un casting de musiciens du cru -grâce à l'enthousiasme communicatif qu'on lui connaît-, sous la houlette de Guillaume Rottier (Rendez-Vous, Quetzal Snakes) à l'enregistrement et au mixage, et prenant soin, tout de même, de confier les guitares à l'australien Zak Olsen (Frowning Clouds, Orb)."
Alors que ses deux précédents EP -Smoke The Boat (2019), Piano, Woman & Bicycle (2020)-, étaient autant de cartes postales illustrant ses pérégrinations, tant musicales que géographiques, Drink Up, Rainforest Sinatra est l'album d'un freak qui s'installe durablement dans nos contrées et nous les raconte, à l'instar d'un Robert Wyatt ou d'un Kevin Ayers avant lui. Je peine à trouver une traduction fidèle au terme sloppy qui, de son propre aveu, le définit si bien, mais lui non plus ne la trouverait pas !

And so, after a 6-year break between solo albums,
and splitting his time between the day jobs of Le Villejuif Underground and C.I.A Debutante
Roche returns with "Drink Up, Rainforest Sinatra" his first full-length
garage-crooner since 2015, and a full-blown collaboration with Guillaume Rottier (Rendez-vous, Qúetzal Snåkes) recorded with a motley crew cast of characters from the bouches-du-rhone
and Zak Olsen (Frowning Clouds, Orb) it is a return to loose-lacklustre-boozy-technicolour form following the EPs, "Smoke The Boat" and "Piano, Woman and Bicycle" ...
If you asked for the damned ghosts of Chilton, Fowley, Ayers to appear drenched in Australian drawl
with a saturated pastis-flavoured French touch, then you've ordered the right cocktail.
As a forgotten blog once said of his tomfoolery,
"it's sloppy beyond belief. Like some sort of mix between a depressing Leonard Cohen country jam and a dirty house party 'band' playing their first and last EVER show. Drunkey, bluesy and punky."
